The Orange Door Continues To Roll Out Across Victoria

04 October 2018

The next tranche of Victoria’s new Support and Safety Hubs have been announced, as the Andrews Labor Government works to protect women and children from violence and give them better access to support.

Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings today joined sector partners in Ballarat to announce that The Orange Door will soon operate in Central Highlands, Loddon and Goulburn regions, with new physical locations to open in Ballarat, Bendigo and Shepparton.

The Orange Door is a partnership across government and community sector organisations, and provides a single contact point for adults, children and young people who are experiencing family violence. The Orange Door also integrates the ChildFIRST service to connect families wanting support with the services they need.

A key principle of the service is that there is no wrong door for families seeking support or advice. The Orange Door is welcoming and evokes a sense of hope, giving people the support they need before they reach crisis point.

The three new areas announced today take the total number of hubs across Victoria to eight – with four beginning operations earlier this year in Bayside Peninsula, Barwon, Mallee and North Eastern Melbourne, and one more to open in Inner Gippsland by the end of the year.

More than 15,000 people have already been referred to The Orange Door since the commencement of operations, with thousands of people having come through the door to seek specialist help, advice and support.

By the end of 2021, The Orange Door will be operating across all 17 Victorian Department of Health and Human Services areas. In preparation for this, a Service System Navigator worker will be recruited in each area over the next 12 months to start transitioning local services to The Orange Door service model.

The Labor Government has invested $448.1 million to establish Support and Safety Hubs across the state – a key recommendation of the Royal Commission into Family Violence. This investment formed part of the Government’s record $2.6 billion investment in family violence services.
