A proposal to develop a new police precinct at the western end of Melbourne’s CBD, has progressed to Stage Three of the Government’s Market-led Proposals Interim Guideline.
The proposal by Australia Post and Cbus Property is to develop a new Victoria Police Centre headquarters at 311 Spencer St.
The new site would provide Victoria Police with a consolidated police precinct with connection to the recently opened City West Police Complex. The site is close to the Melbourne Assessment Prison, Southern Cross Station and has good access to Melbourne’s arterial road network for responding to incidents.
The Andrews Labor Government promised to be open and transparent on all new projects. Under the Market Led Proposals Interim Guideline, all proposals that progress to stage 3 of the process are publically disclosed.
The proposal is being assessed by the Department of Treasury and Finance in conjunction with Victoria Police.
The Government’s consideration of this proposal will be predicated on the Victorian taxpayer getting value for money. If agreed to by the Government, Victoria Police would move from the World Trade Centre when their current lease expires in 2020. Alternatively other end-of lease options will be investigated.
The assessment process means the proposal must clearly demonstrate benefits to the community, align with Victoria’s priorities and offer value-for-money for Victorian taxpayers.
