Building The Education State In South-West Victoria

27 July 2016

Students in Portland and Casterton are a step closer to having the facilities they need, thanks to the Andrews Labor Government’s investment of more than $10 million in four local schools.

Minister for Education James Merlino today visited Portland Primary School, Portland Secondary College, Casterton Secondary College and Portland Bay School to meet staff and students, and discuss plans to upgrade facilities and build a new campus.

The four schools all benefitted from the Labor Government’s record $1.1 billion investment to build new schools and upgrade facilities in the Victorian Budget 2016/17.

Portland Bay School, a special development school, received $7 million to relocate from its current cramped base in Edgar Street to a new purpose-built facility at Portland Primary School.

Portland Primary School also received $1 million to upgrade its facilities.

Kneeler Design Architects is now working on the designs for both the school relocation and the upgrades, with builders to be appointed next year.

Portland Secondary College received $2 million and Casterton Secondary College received $750,000.

The schools are now consulting architects, school council, staff and students to decide how they will use the funding.

Architects are expected to be appointed by the end of next month to complete the design work for the upgrades.

The Labor Government is building the Education State so that every local student gets the opportunity for a great education and every community has access to a great school.

Building, fixing and upgrading Victorian school infrastructure gives our students and teachers the environment they need to achieve their best.
