Building The Education State In Croydon

25 November 2016

More than 600 secondary school students in Croydon will soon enjoy a new $18.4 million campus at Melba College thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.

Minister for Education James Merlino and Member for Eastern Metropolitan Region Shaun Leane today turned the first sod on the project, which consolidates Melba College’s two campuses on the former Maroondah Secondary College site.

The new school will feature a global learning building with a food technology learning area, library, café and computer pod. The junior village will include flexible learning spaces and computer pod while the senior village will have specialist science facilities and a senior lounge.

The plans for the new campus have been drawn up by Y2Architecture and S J Higgins have been appointed as the builders. The new-look school is expected to be ready in September 2017.

The initial planning work for Melba College is part of the $10 million Maroondah Education Plan which will also see a redevelopment of Ringwood Secondary College, a stadium for Norwood Secondary College and a performing arts centre for Mullum Primary School.

A further $17.9 million was provided to build the new Melba College in the Victorian Budget 2016/17.

There are now 42 new government schools and hundreds of school upgrades in the construction pipeline following our record $1.8 billion investment in school infrastructure – a school building boom which will create 4000 construction jobs.
