Labor has released the final designs to remove the Ruthven Street level crossing in Macleod and started early works.

Removing the dangerous and congested Ruthven Street level crossing will make journeys safer, get families home sooner and reduce congestion by:

  • slashing 30 minutes of boom gate down time during the morning peak
  • cutting travel times for around 12,600 drivers each weekday.

Community feedback has shaped the final designs which will create safer connections for locals – including installing traffic loops which will trigger traffic lights along Ruthven Street.

The rail bridge design, also shaped by community feedback, will connect Rosanna Parklands with Ellesmere Parade and Ruthven Street – featuring native plants and seating.

A new walking and cycling path will be built along Ellesmere Parade – connecting Macleod and Rosanna.

More than 25,000 trees, native shrubs, flowering plants, and grasses will be planted across the project area.

Major construction will begin later this year, with trains running on the new rail bridge from next year.

Passengers are set to benefit from extra services on the Hurstbridge Line with trains every 20 minutes to Eltham all weekend, and services running every 10 minutes on average between the CBD and Clifton Hill.

Labor's continued investment in the corridor, including completion of the Hurstbridge Line Duplication Project and level crossing removals, has unlocked capacity to run more than 1,000 train services every week.

Making Macleod level crossing free in 2027 will improve safety, reduce congestion and deliver more reliable travel times, building on the benefits unlocked by the nearby North East Link Project.

Only Labor will deliver the infrastructure that will slash travel times and make journeys safer.

While the Liberals $40 billion cuts agenda will mean less trains and projects cancelled.
