Thousands Have Their Say On SRL East Neighbourhoods

01 February 2024

The Allan Labor Government is calling for more local communities to join the thousands of Victorians who have already come forward to have their say on the neighbourhoods that will surround the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East stations.

The draft SRL Precinct Visions released in December have already received 2,000 responses from residents, traders and community groups – and have been viewed more than 19,000 times.

The drafts outline how the communities that surround the six underground SRL East stations at Box Hill, Burwood, Glen Waverley, Monash, Clayton and Cheltenham could evolve over time.

With trains running by 2035, SRL East will open up access to key education, health and employment centres and deliver more housing options in each of the SRL East Precincts.

The Precinct Visions will provide certainty to communities on how each neighbourhood will benefit from SRL.

Over 1,000 people are already working to build the SRL, with the first tunnelling contract awarded late last year and the next tunnelling contract to be awarded this year – this once in a generation project is powering ahead.

There will be further opportunities for locals to provide input in person and online, as part of an extensive ongoing engagement program.

The SRL East team will also deliver targeted consultation to Greek and Chinese communities, while seven Community Panels – including a Youth Panel – will allow for ongoing and in-depth discussions throughout the planning process.

With Melbourne’s population expected to reach the size of London in the 2050s, SRL will address housing supply across our middle suburbs – delivering more diverse and affordable housing options close to world-class public transport, jobs and services.

Feedback on the SRL Precinct Visions will remain open until Sunday, 3 March and locals are encouraged to have their say by visiting srleastvisions.com.au.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Suburban Rail Loop Danny Pearson

"The Suburban Rail Loop will help shape how Melbourne grows over time, providing more housing options closer to jobs, services and great public transport."

“Victorians have endorsed SRL twice, and we’ve received huge interest and a positive response from locals – it’s great to see people getting involved in shaping the future of their neighbourhoods.”
