Supporting South West Victorians To Get Work Ready

23 March 2018

The Andrews Labor Government today announced $3.6 million for a South West Institute of TAFE-led project to examine how locally-delivered training can best meet the region’s future workforce needs.

Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney said the project would ensure South West Institute of TAFE is able to develop and deliver training that accounts for the changing nature of work.

It is predicted the average 15-year-old today will have 17 jobs, over five different careers in their lifetime.

Through the project, South West Institute of TAFE will develop a prototype New Work Mindset tool using research developed by the Foundation for Young Australians.

The prototype will help students focus on developing transferable skills rather than focusing on specific job training, increasing the long term employability of TAFE graduates.

South West Institute of TAFE will also develop a new training model for the healthcare and social assistance sector and develop a new co-working space at its Warrnambool campus, which students will share with local businesses to gain insights and make industry connections.

The New Work Mindsets in South West Victoria project is being led by South West Institute of TAFE in partnership with the Foundation for Young Australians, Lyndoch Living, Western District Health Services and Eventide Homes.

The project is being funded through the $35 million Workplace Training Innovation Fund, part of the Labor Government’s Skills First initiative, which is ensuring students receive high quality training that delivers the workforce skills employers need.

The Labor Government is supporting Victorian TAFEs and training providers to work in partnership with industry to develop innovative training programs that harness the very latest technologies and approaches.
