Gary Maas, the Member for Narre Warren South, has advised me that he will not be seeking re-election in 2026.
For more than two decades, Gary has worked tirelessly for the labour movement, for working people, and for the values that brought him into public life.
Before coming to Parliament, Gary spent 16 years with the National Union of Workers, as a lawyer, organiser and later as its State Secretary – standing up for some of our state’s hardest working and lowest paid workers.
People who do tough jobs. People who work long hours. People who deserve security, decent wages, safe workplaces and respect.
The son of Sri Lankan migrants, he grew up in Melbourne’s outer south-east with parents who worked hard, built a life here, and gave their kids every opportunity.
He understands the difference public education, secure work, and fairness can mean in the lives of working families.
Since being elected in 2018, Gary has worked hard for the people of Narre Warren South.
He helped deliver the Casey Hospital Emergency Department and Paediatric Emergency Zone, the new Kala Primary School, the rebuild of Narre Warren Station and the removal of the Webb Street level crossing.
He’s been a strong voice for one of our state’s great multicultural communities – and the schools, clubs, faith groups, and organisations that make it strong.
Gary has also made an important contribution to our Parliament, including as Chair of the Integrity and Oversight Committee, Chair of the Scrutiny of Acts and Regulations Committee, and Government Co-Chair of the Workplace Incidents Consultative Committee (WICC).
His work on WICC is something to be particularly proud of.
It’s meant sitting with people and families whose lives have been changed forever by workplace tragedy, and helping to turn that pain into stronger protections and better conditions for working people.
I want to thank Gary for his service to the Victorian Government, the Parliament, the labour movement and the community of Narre Warren South.
I also send my best wishes to his daughters, Audrey and Harriet, who mean everything to him.
Gary will continue to serve his community until the election.
