Stars Shine Bright At Victorian School Sports Awards

The state’s best athletes at government schools have been recognised for their achievements at this year’s Victorian School Sports Awards.

Minister for Education Ben Carroll congratulated this year’s winners, with the ceremony held at the MCG to mark the 30th year of the awards.

The Victorian School Sports Awards celebrate exceptional commitment and performance from Victorian school student athletes, while also recognising leadership and community contribution through participation in sport. 

Past winners include Olympic gold medal pole vaulter Steven Hooker, Matildas star Steph Catley and AFL and AFLW footballers Patrick Dangerfield and Monique Conti.

Hosted by world champion marathon runner and Olympian Steve Moneghetti, 34 students were presented with Sporting Blue awards for excellence in their chosen sport, while other accolades recognised outstanding achievement in student, teacher and school categories. 

The Lindsay Gaze Outstanding Sports Leadership Award was awarded to Brunswick South West Primary School student Arlo Styant-Browne – who coached and captained the school boys’ basketball team to wins at the interschool sport basketball district and division competitions, and placed third at the regional championships. 

Arlo, the first primary school student to win the award, also coached the school’s Australian rules football team to the Division Championships. 

Sandringham East Primary School baseballer Bodhi Evans won the Outstanding Sporting Achievement Award – for leading his team in the School Sport Victoria State Softball Competition and representing Australia in the 2023 Under 12 Baseball World Cup in Taiwan. 

Maribyrnong College student, Jamie Cefai, won the secondary award after winning silver at the 2023 Australian Open Championships – while Serpell Primary School teacher, Lola Hughes Wyndham Central College teacher, Rebecca Sandlant received the Outstanding Teacher Contribution Award.
