South Yarra Station Redevelopment Begins

17 April 2018

Passengers will soon find it easier to move between trains and trams at South Yarra Station with the Andrews Labor Government announcing a multimillion dollar upgrade of the busy interchange.

The Victorian Budget 2018/19 will provide $12.33 million for a wider entrance at South Yarra Station and fully accessible tram stops – the first stage of a new South Yarra station precinct.

With patronage at the station growing, the works will widen the station entrance on Toorak Road and redesign the station layout to provide a larger, more efficient and accessible space for passengers.

It will also reduce queuing and make for a quicker, smoother entry and exit.

The tram stops opposite the station will be upgraded to enable people with a disability to move between the tram stop and the station safely, sheltered from the wind and rain.

The Labor Government’s $11 billion Metro Tunnel will free up space in the City Loop to run more trains, enabling a 48 per cent increase in passenger capacity on the Sandringham line.

Once complete, the Sandringham line will be able to carry an additional 72,000 peak passengers every week.

This will ensure that South Yarra continues to enjoy high-frequency services of approximately every 2 minutes during the peak, providing benefits to Prahran, Windsor and South Yarra Station passengers.

Ongoing planning work will investigate options to deliver a fully accessible station, additional station access points, improved cycling facilities, and better integration with the surrounding community over the longer term.

The Labor Government will consult with the City of Stonnington, local businesses and residents about the design of the train station and tram stop upgrades, and the long-term development options at the station, to deliver the best solution for the community.

Project planning will start immediately, with works expected to start in mid 2019 and be completed by the end of 2019.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan

“We know South Yarra is busy – that’s why we’re making it quicker and easier to get out of the station, particularly during the peak.”

“These works, combined with the Metro Tunnel, will mean less queues and more trains for South Yarra Station to get people home faster and more comfortably.”
