Ground has been broken on the $50 million Deakin University accommodation project, just weeks after Minister for Planning Richard Wynne granted approval.
Mr Wynne joined member for Geelong Christine Couzens and Deakin University Vice Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander to mark the start of works.
The project will deliver more construction jobs and prove much-needed student housing right in the heart of Deakin’s waterfront campus.
The 11-storey building is a u-shaped, north-facing design that will maximise natural light for 410 rooms.
The development also includes a ground floor architectural workshop, and will be ready in time for students to move into by the start of the 2018 academic year.
The project was supported by the City of Greater Geelong and the Geelong Authority, was praised by the Office of the Victorian Government Architect as setting a good precedent for renewal in central Geelong.
The Andrews Labor Government is working to boost jobs and investment in Geelong and is encouraging more housing and infrastructure and the planning process has been streamlined so that all major proposals go directly to the Minister.
Earlier this year, the government launched the Revitalising Central Geelong Action Plan, a 10-year agenda of initiatives designed to turn central Geelong into a hub for new jobs and sustainable growth.
The plan highlighted the need to encourage more accommodation for students close to the CBD to support Deakin University’s growing numbers
