Work Starts On New Colac Police Station

18 September 2017

Construction is underway on the new Colac Police Station as the Andrews Labor Government’s investment in regional policing continues to roll out across the state.

Minister for Police Lisa Neville today met with local police officers and toured the worksite of the new station, next to the Colac Magistrates’ Court, on Queen Street.

Police recently appointed Commercial Industrial Construction Group to build Colac’s new police hub, with construction due to be completed late next year.

The new building will replace the outdated police station on the corner of Queen and Dennis streets, which has served the local community since the 1930s.

It will give the hardworking officers in the region a modern facility to support the local community.

The purpose-built station will also be a base for a number of specialist police teams including the Criminal Investigation Unit, the Highway Patrol and the Sexual Offence and Child Abuse Investigation Team.

The government provided more than $11 million to rebuild the Colac police station as part of its $36.8 million package to replace or refurbish regional and rural police stations and residences.

The funding package also includes:

  • new police stations at Bright, Murtoa, Warburton, Mallacoota, Corryong and Cowes
  • $2.9 million to refurbish 15 police stations
  • $3.9 million to replace and refurbish 10 police residences across Victoria.

The Labor Government has also committed a record $2 billion through its historic Community Safety Statement to give Victoria Police the powers and resources it needs to keep the Victorian community safe.

Under this funding, a further six regional police stations – at Wedderburn, Warracknabeal, Rutherglen, Alexandra, Wycheproof and Tangambalanga – will be rebuilt or replaced in the coming years.
