Work To Get Underway To Fix Kerferd Road Pier

26 October 2018

The Andrews Labor Government is fixing a much-loved Albert Park icon, with work to get underway next week to restore the Kerferd Road Pier to its former glory.

The Labor Government is investing $1.6 million to overhaul the historically significant pier.

Built in 1889, the Kerferd Road Pier is of enormous significance to the local community but has been closed to the public since late last year.

The works will upgrade the entire pier and will include a complete reconstruction of the middle pier and lower landing using timber piles, including a new timber deck and handrails.

The pier, which is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register, is popular with walkers, fishers and provides casual berthing for boats on Port Phillip Bay.

Kerferd Road Pier has historical and architectural significance as a rare example of a substantially intact nineteenth century pier in Port Phillip Bay.

It retains important elements of its original construction which will be protected as part of this upgrade.

Parks Victoria will project manage the restoration, which is expected to extend its working life for at least another 25 years.

Works are expected to be complete in early 2019.
