Victorian Fisheries Authority Set To Swim On July 1

The new Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) will commence on 1 July 2017 to support the sustainable growth of Victoria’s commercial fishing and aquaculture sectors and strengthen the management and regulation of recreational fishing.

Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford today announced the new Chair of the Authority, Deputy Chair and Board members.

The new VFA will drive jobs growth and export in Victoria’s commercial fishing and aquaculture sectors.

It will continue delivery of the Andrews Labor Government’s recreational Target One Million initiative, aimed at getting more people fishing, more often.

Order of Australia Medal recipient Gail Owen will Chair of the new Authority. Ms Owen has previously been an inaugural member of two boards and will provide strong leadership to establish the Authority.

Aquatic scientist Dr Bernadette Northeast has been named as Deputy Chair, and other Board members include Christopher Rose, Christine Cussen, David Shirer, Yorick Piper, Graeme Dear and Rebecca Edwards.In line with the Labor Government’s gender equity requirements for public sector Boards, 50 per cent of appointees to the VFA board are women.

The Board, appointed through a public process which began in December 2016, will ensure the VFA’s objectives and functions are achieved and explore new opportunities for fisheries in Victoria.

Applications for the VFA CEO are currently being considered.
