Victoria - The Nation’s Preferred Destination

24 March 2016

Victoria has stamped itself as the nation's preferred destination with the latest population data confirming a new record for net interstate migration.

More than 11,000 people flocked to Victoria from other states and territories over the year to 30 September, 2015 - the highest of any jurisdiction in Australia.

This was coupled with strong population growth which has pushed Victoria's population to just under six million people - more than a quarter of the nation's population.

Victoria's population growth of 1.7 per cent was above the national average of 1.3 per cent.

Victoria added 29 300 persons over the quarter - the highest of all states. This represents more than a third (35.5 per cent) of the national increase.

Treasurer Tim Pallas said Victoria's strong economic activity, jobs growth and a steady pipeline of major infrastructure projects were all contributing factors to the population surge.

Quotes attributable to Treasurer Tim Pallas

“Victoria is a great place to grow a family, a great place to get a job and, above all, a great place to build a future.”
