The Andrews Labor Government is upgrading one of Footscray’s busiest intersections to improve safety and make it easier for road users to travel across the area.
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne today announced the intersection of Moore Street and Hopkins Street will be realigned with new pedestrian crossings, stopping lines and traffic lights.
The $3.14 million project will also see new bollards, fencing and tactile paving installed at the intersection, as well as asphalt resurfacing and new line marking.
The intersection upgrade has been carefully planned to consider a range of factors, including road space, relocation of vital utilities and impacts on traffic flow.
As a high volume of pedestrians use the area daily to access Footscray Station and Footscray Market, the upgrade will improve driver awareness and make it safer for pedestrians crossing the intersection.
Works are scheduled to get underway next month. Ahead of the works, a permanent 40-kilometre speed limit will be introduced on Moore Street between Ballarat Road and Hopkins Street.
Interim safety measures have been in place at the intersection since January 2022, including the installation of flexible bollards, yellow pavement treatment and new ‘watch for pedestrians’ signs to improve awareness of the crossings.
The project forms part of the Labor Government’s Safe Pedestrian Program, which focuses on improving safety for our most vulnerable road users.
A truck curfew continues to remain in place on Moore Street between Hopkins Street and Ballarat Road. Once open, the West Gate Tunnel will take 9,000 trucks off roads in the inner west and allow for the introduction of 24-hour truck bans on six local roads including Moore Street.
