Upgraded Stadium A Winner For Oakleigh Community

10 February 2021

Local gymnastics, basketball, netball and volleyball players in Oakleigh now have fantastic new indoor facilities after the completion of major works at the Oakleigh Recreation Centre backed by the Andrews Labor Government.

Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence today joined Member for Oakleigh Steve Dimopoulos at the centre to officially launch the new facilities, made possible by a $3 million investment from the Better Indoor Stadiums Fund and a $500,000 loan provided through the Community Sports Infrastructure Loan Scheme.

The overhaul of the centre included construction of five new indoor basketball courts, which can also be used for netball, basketball, volleyball and other sports, and an improved gymnasium and group fitness areas.

The conversion has elevated the centre to the status of a state-level gymnastics facility, providing the perfect base for the Waverley Gymnastics Club to grow their numbers and host local and regional competitions.

From playspace upgrades to new sport centres, investments like these provide high quality and accessible places for Victorians to enjoy the benefits of sport and active recreation participation.

They also create jobs, stimulate local economies and fast-tracking community recovery by improving health, wellbeing and social outcomes for Victorian communities.

The Labor Government has invested more than $1 billion in community sport and active recreation infrastructure since 2014.

Ms Spence acknowledged the Monash City Council, Federal Government and Waverley Gymnastics Club for their commitment and financial contributions to the projects.
