Update On Worker Transfer Scheme For Latrobe Valley Workers

23 February 2017

The Premier today met with affected Hazelwood workers and their representatives to discuss ongoing progress on a worker transfer scheme for those working across our Latrobe Valley power stations.

The proposed scheme would open opportunities at other power stations for retrenched Hazelwood workers, so they can continue working in the power generation industry.

The Andrews Labor Government has been working on a worker transfer scheme from the moment that Engie announced they would be closing Hazelwood. As part of this effort, the former Federal Minister Simon Crean was engaged to help facilitate an agreement.

The Labor Government has made significant progress with the numerous parties involved in this matter. This includes a Government offer to help fund this scheme, in partnership with the relevant energy companies.

We are very appreciative of the progress made, and hope the good faith bargaining that has been demonstrated so far continues, so we can maintain high skilled and high paid jobs in the Valley.

However, there remains more work to do to make this scheme a reality. We are continuing to work with all the parties, and pending the agreement, hope to have further announcements shortly.

The Labor Government will always stand up for the Latrobe Valley communities and we will do whatever it takes to support the Valley through difficult times, and give locals the future they deserve.
