Turkey Expansion In Bairnsdale A Win For Local Jobs

03 January 2018

The Andrews Labor Government has helped secure a $1.13 million investment in Bairnsdale by Leadoux Turkeys to relocate and build a new production and processing facility that will create 17 new full time jobs.

Leadoux Turkeys is a family business that has operated in Bairnsdale since 1982 and currently supplies around 45 butcher outlets and farmers’ markets across Gippsland and throughout Victoria.

The company will move from its existing on-farm operation to a large site of industrial land where it will be able to increase production and generate future growth within Australia and potentially into export markets.

It will see the company increase its employee base from six full time positions to 23 within two years.

The $1.13 million project includes:

  • construction of incubator shedding
  • a new processing facility
  • a waste management composting system
  • solar power installation
  • administration facilities
  • and a caretaker residence

The new site will use grey water recycling and a highly advanced composting system which will achieve zero waste from its bird processing operations and will also provide an opportunity to showcase the innovative operation to other businesses.

The new purpose-built facility will enable Leadoux to increase its production from 8,000 turkeys per annum to 20,000 birds per annum by 2019, which will open up significant new opportunities.

The site will provide high-standard facilities for animal welfare with advanced climate controlled systems that are designed to manage extreme heat events, with regulated water systems and improved ventilation flows.

Right across the state the Labor Government is investing in projects that create jobs, advance regional economies and make our regions even better places to live, visit and do business.
