Trout Stocking Provides Holiday Fun In Wangaratta

10 July 2017

Merriwa Park Lake in Wangaratta is one of several stocked family fishing Lakes in the North East set to receive more than 200 rainbow trout yearlings.

Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Victoria Danielle Green released the trout yearlings today in what is a sure to be a school holiday fishing bonanza.

Nearly 27,000 rainbow trout have been stocked into 70 waters across the state so Victorian families can wet a line.

The fish are a catchable size now and all part of the Andrews Labor Government’s Target One Million plan to get more people fishing, more often.

The fish were grown at the Victorian Fisheries Authority’s Snobs Creek hatchery, near Eildon, which is celebrating its 70th birthday this year.

Merriwa Park boasts family friendly facilities with good parking, toilets and surrounding parkland, which provide a safe and pleasant outdoor fishing experience for beginners and juniors.

The lake also received silver perch fingerlings last summer, which should grow and provide summertime fishing opportunities for youngsters in the years ahead.

Other North East Family Fishing Lakes that received rainbow trout for these holidays include Les Stone Park Lake (200 rainbow trout), Sumsion Gardens Lake (250) and Felltimber Creek Wetlands (400), all in Wodonga, Marysville Lake (450), Eildon Pondage (2000), Victoria Lake, Shepparton (500), Sambell Lake, Beechworth (300), Tronoh Dredge Hole, Harrietville (300) and Anderson Lake, Chiltern (300).

These waters provide convenient access for families with fishing platforms, bankside tracks, picnic tables and other facilities.
