Transforming Secondary Education In Shepparton

18 December 2017

After months of detailed community consultation and engagement, the Andrews Labor Government has endorsed a recommendation to create a new one-campus secondary school in Shepparton ensuring local secondary student have access to the highest quality education.

The Shepparton Education Plan Advisory Committee considered feedback and advice from working groups, education experts and hundreds of community members as part of community consultation before recommending merging the four local government secondary schools into one new school.

This decision is a crucial step in the long-term plan to transform education across Shepparton and Mooroopna and will see the merger of Shepparton High School, McGuire College, Mooroopna Secondary College and Wanganui Park Secondary College.

This large school, to be located in Shepparton, will be broken up into smaller schools or ‘houses’ to create smaller learning communities where students are well known, and can build connections over many year levels.

Students will stay in the same house throughout secondary school, with Years 7-9 students learning within their house, and Years 10-12 students moving around the campus for specialised subjects of their choice where needed.

As well as new school buildings and resources designed to meet the needs of students in the future, students will have access to improved learning and teaching opportunities and increased wellbeing and sense of community.

In order to further support Mooroopna Secondary College students, in 2018, a team of specialist educators will be embedded in the school to support the College’s leadership and teaching team and their students.

Today’s announcement also provides an opportunity to plan for the future of the current Mooroopna Secondary College site. Options for this site will continue to be developed throughout early 2018.

The Labor Government will develop timelines and transition plans for the next stage, and work with students, principals, teachers and education experts to focus on learning approach, curriculum and student outcomes.
