T20 Fans Set To Pack The Stands At The MCG

22 October 2022

The Andrews Labor Government is delivering a blockbuster calendar of major events, with the MCG a full house today for when India take on Pakistan at Melbourne’s first host game of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos today joined ICC T20 World Cup Local Organising Committee CEO Michelle Enright and cricket fans to celebrate the first Melbourne match.

Adding to the atmosphere of today’s sell-out crowd, fans can enjoy a carnival of cricket which will take over Yarra Park outside the MCG, with live entertainment, cricket activities and food trucks across a Fan Zone that will be active every match day.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is the biggest global sporting event being held in Australia in 2022 and Victoria is the only state with the honours of two host cities.

The global tournament began in Geelong on Sunday 16 October with a double-header at Kardinia Park Stadium. Geelong and Melbourne will each host six matches, with Melbourne also hosting the Final on Sunday 13 November at the MCG.

In addition to the sold-out India v Pakistan match this Sunday, a bumper crowd is expected to see classic rivals England v Australia on Friday 28 October.

Melbourne’s track record in drawing some of the biggest crowds in cricket to the MCG is well established, including an incredible record-breaking 86,174 people at the ICC Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup in 2020.

The Victorian Government is a proud supporter of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup as part of its blockbuster calendar of major events, with the months ahead packed with even more major events including the Spring Racing Carnival, FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships, Boxing Day Test, and the Australian Open.
