Streetscape Make-Over For Mortlake

18 May 2016

Mortlake’s central business area is set to receive a facelift that will improve safety and provide attractive public spaces for the local community and visitors.

The upgrade will improve the infrastructure and attractiveness of the area from Townsend Street into Dunlop Street which is currently underused due to ageing infrastructure.

Treasurer Tim Pallas today announced the Andrews Labor Government’s $300,000 investment in the project from the Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund.

The upgrade will include:

  • Street furniture improvements
  • Improved traffic safety
  • Gardens and green spaces using low maintenance and drought tolerant plants
  • Pedestrian links between buildings and public spaces

The upgrades will provide existing businesses with the opportunity to expand while encouraging new businesses to take up tenancy.

Safer crossing points will allow pedestrians to access businesses on both sides of the street, and landscaping and plantings will enhance the vibrancy and attractiveness of the area.

The project is set to create eight local jobs during construction and at least one full time position after its completion.

The modernised streetscape will also encourage at least 10 per cent of the 5000 daily vehicles passing through to stop, experience and enjoy what Mortlake has to offer.

The Andrews Labor Government is supporting the upgrade in consultation with the Moyne Shire Council, VicRoads and the local community, whose input and recommendations are driving the process.

It is part of a unified plan that will improvements made to the Mortlake Library, Visitor Information Centre and DC Farran Oval in order to improve the liveability of the town for residents while attracting more visitors to the area to enjoy and participate in community and sporting events.
