Stawell Wins Infrastructure Funding Trifecta

06 April 2017

Racing in Stawell is set to receive more than $575,000 for three key infrastructure projects, thanks to a joint funding package by the Andrews Labor Government.

Minister for Racing Martin Pakula visited Stawell today to announce the infrastructure developments for the Stawell Harness Racing Club (SHRC) and Stawell Racing Club (SRC).

Under the initiatives, the harness racing track at Laidlaw Park will get a $546,000 overhaul, including replacing the track’s base and surface, as well as widening turns and increasing the camber.

The works, which are due to be completed next month, will improve the safety for horses and drivers and bring the track in line with other top venues such as Tabcorp Park Melton and Lords Raceway in Bendigo. The funding will also allow the SHRC to install new fencing and a 105,000-litre water tank, saving $2000 each year.

The thoroughbred racetrack at Stawell Racecourse also underwent major improvements earlier this year, thanks to a new K-Line irrigation system worth almost $20,000.

The upgrades have significantly improved water efficiencies by reducing the time it takes to irrigate the track by two hours, ensuring the SRC is able to provide a consistent and reliable racing and training surface all year round.

The SRC will also receive $8600 to install cabling to improve the quality of visual and sound coverage on race days.

The Government is providing almost $292,000 towards the projects through the Victorian Racing Industry Funding.

The SHRC is contributing more than $182,000 towards the upgrades at Laidlaw Park, with Harness Racing Victoria also providing more than $91,000. The SRC is providing $10,000 towards the upgrades at the Stawell Racecourse.

The racing industry in the Wimmera region generates more than $37 million for the Victorian Government and helps sustain more than 360 full-time equivalent jobs.
