Statement from the Attorney General on The Matter Of Bayley V Nixon

02 September 2015

The Andrews Labor Government supports the decision by Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) to refuse funding for Adrian Bayley’s appeal against two of his rape convictions.

Mr Bayley has now launched legal action in the Supreme Court to challenge the decision of an independent reviewer which upheld VLA’s decision to deny funding for his appeal.

VLA's independent reviewers consider factors specified in the Legal Aid Act 1978 when deciding whether to make a grant of legal assistance.

The Government has determined to intervene in this case in support of the decision of the independent reviewer.
