Statement From The Acting Minister For Water

25 July 2017

Reports of water being misappropriated is very concerning and Victoria supports an independent investigation into these allegations.

Any independent investigation should report to the Murray Darling Basin Ministerial Council and then COAG.

The Murray Basin Plan is about getting the best outcome for the environment, economy, farmers and communities - that can only happen if all jurisdictions work within the rules of the agreement.

Victorian irrigators and farming communities have done much of the heavy lifting in securing water for the environment, including through water buy backs.

The Andrews Labor Government will continue to stand up for Victorian irrigators and farming communities. Victorian interests remain our number one priority.

Victoria has previously sought greater transparency around the outcomes achieved by the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder. This work needs to take place, and it should occur alongside an independent review.

Victoria has a robust water management framework in place which is designed to ensure that the entitlements of all water users are protected.

Victoria expects all jurisdictions to manage within the agreed framework and we will work with other states to ensure the Basin Plan achieves positive outcomes for the environment, irrigators and communities.
