Special $20 Million Top Up To Upgrade Hospital Buildings

28 June 2017

The Andrews Labor Government has delivered a special $20 million boost to modernise ageing infrastructure at 15 health services across Victoria.

Minister for Health Jill Hennessy today announced hospitals will share in funding from a one-off boost that comes on top of $25 million already provided through the Engineering Infrastructure Replacement Program in 2016/17.

The popular program in 2016/17 helped 21 health services replace essential equipment such heating and air conditioning systems, nurse call communications systems, as well as upgrading electrical, water and fire services and lifts.

However, more funding was needed to meet demand. That is why the Labor Government is delivering a further $20 million for even more engineering infrastructure.

New models of engineering infrastructure is vital to improving efficiency and reliability, and ensuring patients can continue to get the very best treatment and care, no matter where they live.

Big winners from the funding top up include Alfred Health which receives $9.4 million to replace the hospital’s sewerage and storm water system and the Royal Melbourne Hospital that is getting $2.1 million to replace cooling towers and an air-cooled chiller.

In rural Victoria, hospitals in Horsham, Wodonga, Mildura, Echuca, Ararat, Sale, Bairnsdale, Wangaratta and Hamilton will share in funding for equipment such as chillers, boilers and emergency generators.

The Victorian Budget 2017/18 delivered $1.67 billion to support hospitals meet demand and provide the high quality care Victorian patients deserve.

Applications to again share in $25 million from the 2017/18 round of the Engineering Infrastructure Replacement Program are also now open. Further information is available at health.vic.gov.au/med-equipExternal Link
