Skills, Jobs And A Future In Victoria’s Booming Rail Industry

07 August 2017

The Andrews Labor Government is giving young people and those reskilling from other sectors experience and opportunities in Victoria’s booming rail industry.

Premier Daniel Andrews joined Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan today to meet the first intake of signalling cadets at the Newport Rail Academy.

The nine cadets will get vital, on-the-job training while working on the Metro Tunnel and Level Crossing Removal Project – boosting their skills and experience while building the biggest transport projects in Victoria’s history.

Over the next two years more than 150 cadets will be recruited to help address the skills gap in railway signal engineering.

They’ll be in high demand in Victoria’s rapidly growing rail industry, with the Labor Government’s record investment in the Metro Tunnel, level crossing removals and other major transport projects creating tens-of-thousands of jobs across the state.

Increasing the number of qualified signalling experts is critical to the delivery of these huge projects, which will boost safety, slash congestion and create room to run more trains, more often.

That’s why the Government has partnered with the rail industry to develop a vocational Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma of Railway Signalling Systems.

The new courses have been developed in under six months in collaboration with Metro, V/Line, United Group Limited, Aurecon Group, and Siemens Limited, with accreditation guidance from Box Hill Institute.

The program is part of the Labor’s Government’s efforts to boost local skills and opportunities through its record investment in road and rail infrastructure.

The Major Project Skills Guarantee mandates that at least 10 per cent of work on all major Government projects in Victoria is carried out by apprentices, trainees and engineering cadets.
