Nearly 60 Victorian schools are being recognised for taking the lead on the environmental issues in their communities.
The finalists for the ResourceSmart Schools Awards have been announced by the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D'Ambrosio ahead of the presentation ceremony in October.
Sustainability Victoria received 150 entries from 87 schools. Now in its 10th year, the 2017 Awards focused on the theme ‘a decade of school wins for the environment.’
The ResourceSmart Schools program inspires students and their schools to take action on sustainability and climate change, while providing new learning opportunities.
Projects included the installation of solar panels, grey water ponds, garden beds, aquaponics ponds and beds, re-used tyre and sleeper walls, permaculture areas, compost systems and orchards.
Some projects were integrated into the school curriculum with teachers helping students through hands-on real-life learning opportunities.
A plan was worked out, put into practice and students focused on getting a result.
Sustainability Victoria has supported more than half of Victoria’s government and non-government schools to embed sustainability into everything they do.
