Record Rail Investment Boosts Bendigo Jobs

30 November 2017

Sixteen Bendigo locals have secured full-time work at Southern Shorthaul Railroad over the past six months thanks to the Andrews Labor Government’s record investment in new trains.

Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan today toured the Bendigo workshop and met staff recently employed on a permanent basis thanks to an ongoing pipeline of work.

The Labor Government’s ten year rolling stock plan and huge pipeline of major rail projects – including the $1.57 billion Regional Rail Revival – have enabled Southern Shorthaul Railroad to employ more permanent staff.

In the last six months, Southern Shorthaul Railroad has provided financial security for an additional 16 locals and their families, with more than half of their workforce now employed on a permanent basis.

Previously, Southern Shorthaul Railroad was only able to employ people on a casual basis due to the sporadic nature of maintenance and construction work for the rail sector.

The Labor Government is supporting up to 10,000 jobs to keep Victorians moving through orders of 80 E-Class trams, 65 High Capacity Metro Trains, 87 V/Locity units and 19 X’Trapolis trains.
