Record Funding Boost For Better Patient Care

19 July 2017

The Andrews Labor Government will spend a record $18.12 billion across the health system over the next year so more Victorian patients can get the highest quality care and treatment they need sooner.

Minister for Health Jill Hennessy today announced the 2017/18 budget allocations for Victorian hospitals, as well as a new state-of-the-art stroke care unit for the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

The funding boost comes on the back of an extra $1.67 billion in this year’s Victorian Budget 2017/18.

The budget breakdown shows how the Labor Government’s record investment in the health system is split among hospitals, ambulance services, mental health and drug services, aged care, community health and public health services.

Victorian hospitals alone will receive $10.6 billion, which is $665.84 million – or 6.7 per cent more – than was provided in the previous financial year.

This is $1.76 billion more than hospitals received under the former Liberal Government in their last budget in 2014/15.

As part of the boost, Melbourne Health will receive $796.11 million, up by $69.6 million – or 9.6 per cent – on the previous year, with the Royal Melbourne Hospital also set to welcome a new and expanded 31-bed stroke care unit, made possible due to the $1 billion Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre project.

The existing stroke unit will also be refurbished to create an extra 20 surgical beds, creating a total 51 new beds.

The announcement comes as Australia’s first ever dedicated stroke ambulance prepares to hit the road in Melbourne later this year, delivering even quicker diagnosis and treatment for patients suffering a life-threatening stroke.

The Government’s increased funding will support hospitals to meet demand so patients can access the care they need and deserve, more quickly, no matter where they live.

It will enable hospitals to admit 1.9 million patients, treat 1.8 million patients in emergency and carry out more than 200,000 elective surgeries to reduce waiting lists even further.
