Rail And Road Upgrades Over The Long Weekend

10 June 2021

Public transport passengers and motorists are advised to plan-ahead and allow extra travel time over the long weekend with a huge program of project works and critical maintenance taking place on nine train lines.

As part of Victoria’s Big Build, works on the Metro Tunnel, Sunbury Line Upgrade, level crossing removals and Regional Rail Revival projects will progress as we continue to build a better train network for all Victorians.

There will be road and tram disruptions as crews build a level-access tram stop on Toorak Road to improve accessibility as part of the South Yarra Station upgrade and upgrade the tram power supply, preparing route 58 for bigger E-class trams.

Buses will replace trams on Route 58 and Toorak Road will be closed to traffic between Punt Road and Chapel Street from 10:00pm Friday, 11 June to 5:00am Saturday, 19 June.

Viaduct works affecting the Mernda, Hurstbridge, Lilydale, Belgrave, Glen Waverley and Alamein lines will mean trains won’t run through the City Loop and will go directly to/from Flinders Street Station from 9:00pm Friday until last train Sunday.

The viaduct is located between Flinders and Southern Cross stations and is the busiest rail bridge in Melbourne. The weekend works include repairing and replacing bridge supports from Elizabeth Street to the Melbourne Aquarium, sandblasting and repainting. Passengers should use tram services to travel around the city.

Maintenance on the Frankston, Cranbourne and Pakenham lines will see buses replacing trains between Richmond and Moorabbin from 8.40pm Friday, to last service Sunday and between Caulfield and Westall on Monday.

The Sunbury Line Upgrade will continue with buses replacing trains on the Sunbury Line between North Melbourne and Sunbury on Saturday and Sunday, as crews work to complete overhead wiring upgrades at West Footscray, Watergardens and Sunbury which will allow bigger, more modern trains to run on the line more often.

These works will also impact regional Victoria with coaches to replace trains on sections of the Bairnsdale, Geelong, Warrnambool, Bendigo, Echuca, Swan Hill and Ballarat lines.

Construction on the new pedestrian overpass at Waurn Ponds Station and track assembly for the Boorcan crossing loop will continue while coaches replace trains between Warrnambool and Geelong until Sunday 13 June, to help deliver more frequent and reliable services on the Geelong and Warrnambool lines.

On the Werribee Line, crews will continue building the pedestrian overpass at Hoppers Crossing as part of the Old Geelong Road level crossing removal project.

Buses will replace trains between North Melbourne and Werribee/Williamstown overnight Saturday and Sunday. Buses are also replacing trains between Laverton and Werribee until Monday, 21 June, as work continues on the Aircraft station underpass.

In metropolitan Melbourne, masks must be worn everywhere, except in your home and travel is restricted to 25km from your home. For all Victorians, if you're travelling on public transport, or in a taxi or rideshare service, you must wear a fitted mask covering your nose and mouth for the entire journey.
