The Presidents Cup Is On Its Way Back To Victoria

24 September 2017

With dates and a venue locked in, Victoria can look forward to making history as the Presidents Cup returns to the sporting capital in 2019.

The 2019 Presidents Cup will be held on 9-15 December at the prestigious Royal Melbourne Golf Club.

Victoria will become the first location outside the United States to stage the event for a third time, attracting thousands more visitors and boosting our visitor economy.

Melbourne last hosted the Cup in 2011, and 1998 where the international team, led by Australian Peter Thomson won for the first time. The biennial tournament will once again bring the top golfers from the United States and across the globe to Victoria.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events John Eren will attend the 2017 Presidents Cup at the Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey, as part of a trip to the United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and United States to promote Victoria as one of the world’s best destinations for major events.

To inform the Government’s Major Stadia Strategy, Mr Eren will tour the Barclays Centre in New York and the redevelopment of Tottenham Hotspurs’ home, White Hart Lane, in London.

While the Government considers options to broaden the Major Sporting Events Act, a meeting will take place with Ticketmaster to discuss the most effective policies to help crack down on ticket scalpers in Victoria.

Mr Eren will hear from Sport England – founders of the ‘This Girl Can’ program – about their world leading behavioural change programs, designed to get more people active and involved in grassroots sport.

Leading British sport development charity, SportEd, will then demonstrate how sport can engage disadvantaged young people and help to build social and community cohesion.

In New York City, Mr Eren will tour the Museum of Modern Art in preparation for the Winter Masterpieces Exhibition that is coming to Melbourne in 2018.

Discussions with a number of airlines including Emirates, Etihad and Qantas will also take place to lure even more direct flights to our state. These airlines have a significant presence in Victoria through their sponsorships with various sports teams, cultural and sporting events.
