Oliver And Olivia Reign Supreme As Top 10 Baby Names Revealed

07 January 2020

Olivia and Oliver are Victoria’s most popular baby names once again, for the second year in a row for Olivia and an impressive six years running for Oliver, with 419 girls and 537 boys receiving the names in 2019.

Acting Attorney-General Ben Carroll today visited the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital today to meet some of the state’s newest Victorians.

Olivia and Oliver have remained in the top ten list for baby names for the last decade, proving their popularity amongst Victorian parents.

Charlotte, Mia and Amelia continue to be popular girls’ names for the ninth consecutive year in a row, while Jack, William and Noah have continued to place in the top five baby names for boys since 2014.

Traditional names continue to dominate the top ten baby names for boys in the state, with Thomas, Charlie and Henry placing fifth, eighth and ninth respectively.

Ruby and Harper are new additions to the top 10 names for girls this year, placing in the ninth and tenth spots. For boys, Lucas is the only new addition to the top 10 names this year, replacing Liam.

Popular names over time can be searched at the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria website www.bdm.vic.gov.auExternal Link

All births in Victoria must be registered with Births, Deaths and Marriages, which can now be done online at www.bdm.vic.gov.auExternal Link .

There is no fee to register the birth but parents can choose to pay to order a commemorative birth certificate to celebrate the occasion.

Quotes attributable to Acting Attorney-General Ben Carroll

“The birth of a baby is a wonderful and special time for parents—but settling on what little bub will be named is not always an easy decision.”

“It’s always fascinating to learn why parents have chosen a particular name for their child, whether it is because they simply like the name, or because it has cultural or significant family ties.”

“I’d encourage parents to give their children a good start in life by registering the arrival of their new baby with the Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.”
