Drivers and horses are enjoying better racing and training tracks at the Charlton Harness Racing Club, thanks to a new water truck partly funded by the Andrews Labor Government.
The Government provided $30,000 from its Victorian Racing Industry Fund to help purchase the $60,000 truck.
As well as savings in water and fuel consumption, the new truck is helping the club to prepare its racing and training surfaces to a higher standard, improving horse welfare and helping to prolong their careers.
The racing industry in the Mallee region generates more than $58 million for the Victorian economy and helps sustain more than 570 full-time equivalent jobs.
The previous 1960s model truck required constant repairs and maintenance, making it no longer efficient to run.
The racing and training tracks at Charlton Park consist of a fine dust material, which provides an excellent surface, but require regular water treatment to minimise dust.
The new truck, delivered in time for the summer racing season, features an hydraulic pump and spray unit that can cover larger areas of the track while still offering the same level of surface penetration.
Harness Racing Victoria and the Club each contributed $15,000 towards the cost of the truck.
Charlton Park is a popular community hub for local residents, with the Club sharing the venue with nine other sporting and recreational bodies.
