Minister for Education James Merlino today announced the future site for Warrnambool Special Developmental School, with land to be purchased for it on Wollaston Road.
The Andrews Labor Government committed $5 million in the 2015-16 Victorian Budget to fund the first stage of the relocation project, including purchasing land and planning the new site.
Mr Merlino and Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney joined students at the Wollaston Road site today to celebrate this important first step.
On Wednesday, Mr Merlino also visited Portland Bay School and Portland Primary School to meet staff and students and discuss the proposed co-location of the two schools. A feasibility study into future options for Portland Bay School to meet the long term needs of the community has recommended the facility co-locate to the Portland Primary School site.
The proposed co-location provides an opportunity for both schools to share some facilities and programs, and an architect has been appointed to begin developing a master plan for the project.
Mr Merlino also visited Koroit and District Primary School and Woolsthorpe Primary School to tour facilities and discuss ongoing priorities with staff and students.
The Labor Government has invested almost $4 billion in Victoria’s education and skills system -representing the single biggest boost to education funding in Victoria’s history.
This includes $747 million extra funding for schools over four years to ensure every community has access to a great school and every classroom great teachers.
