New Pavilion Opens In Time For Ski Season At Whiskey Flat

11 June 2022

A new indoor pavilion is now open at Mt Hotham thanks to the Andrews Labor Government, as snow falls across the state’s Alpine region.

Parliamentary Secretary for Sport Danielle Green today officially opened the new Whiskey Flat Alpine Recreational Facility, made possible by a $800,000 investment from the Labor Government.

As well as being a popular ski resort, Mt Hotham hosts Australia’s only on-snow international-standard Biathlon shooting range.

The pavilion provides a great new base for the Australian Biathlon Association to host more athletes at international competitions and will help maintain Mt Hotham’s position as the leading Biathlon training site in the southern hemisphere.

Biathlon is a small but rapidly growing sport in Victoria. It’s a Winter Olympics medal event that combines cross country skiing and target rifle shooting.

The funding for the project comes from the Local Sports Infrastructure Fund - backed by up to $30 million from the recent state budget, with $10 million dedicated to female friendly facilities.

It’s part of more than $1.2 billion invested by the Government in community sport and active recreation infrastructure since 2014.

Investments like these are all about creating jobs, stimulating local economies, levelling the playing field and fast-tracking community recovery by improving the health, wellbeing, and social outcomes for Victorian communities.

Ms Green acknowledged the Mt Hotham Alpine Resort Management Board for its $800,000, and the Australian Biathlon Association and local community for its $20,000 contributions to the project.
