New Organics Plan To Meet Future Growth Challenges

05 October 2015

Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water, Lisa Neville today announced a new waste strategy to better manage and recover Victoria’s organic waste over the next 30 years.

The Victorian Organics Resource Recovery Strategy will facilitate collaborations between local government, industry and communities to ensure that our state’s organic waste is managed safely and sustainably, while strengthening the organics recovery industry.

Victorian households and businesses generate more than two million tonnes of organic waste each year, almost half of which ends up in landfill. As this waste decomposes, it generates methane, a volatile gas that is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide, trapping heat and contributing to the impacts of climate change.

The Strategy will guide industry to transition to new technologies, improve the recovery, treatment and processing of organic resources, whilst protecting the environment, creating jobs and boosting the economy.

The Andrews Labor Government will work with the organics recovery industry to develop quality assurance processes and standards for recycled organic products to drive end markets, provide guidance to local governments on how to optimize the performance of household organics collection systems, and establish a cross-government working group to review and streamline guidance provided to industry and local government on legislative frameworks for managing organic waste.

The Strategy was developed in partnership with state government agencies, local government, and industry to address challenges and gaps in the market. Thank you to all the groups who make contributions during the draft consultation phase.
