New Jobs At Susan Day Cakes A Sweetener For Victorian Economy

23 June 2015

The Andrews Labor Government has welcomed the announcement that Susan Day Cakes will create 51 new jobs at its purpose built facility in Hallam.

While touring the plant, Premier Daniel Andrews, joined by Minister for Industry, Lily D’Ambrosio, said the development is good news for the company and the local workforce.

Susan Day Cakes is a packaged cake manufacturer which supplies retailers and supermarkets throughout Australia.

The new jobs are part of an $8 million capital investment program being undertaken by the company, with the 5,000 sq metre facility in Hallam being reconfigured and improved.

The new staff are expected to be employed by 27 July this year.

The Labor Government has identified food and fibre as one of the six sectors primed for extraordinary growth that will be targeted to create 100,000 jobs as part of the Back to Work plan.

Since being elected, the Labor Government has created 55,400 jobs, with the unemployment rate dropping from 6.7% to 6.0%.

The 2015-16 Victorian Budget secured the $200 million Future Industries Fund, which will support business experts and workers to grow and invest in the sector.

The Government is also supporting local businesses to expand and more people to return to the workforce through the $100 million Back to Work Scheme, which kicks off on 1 July this year.

The scheme provides financial assistance to businesses to hire unemployed youth, the long-term unemployed and retrenched workers.
