The Andrews Labor Government is helping to fund safe and affordable homes for vulnerable women in Melbourne’s north.
A group of women and their children who were at risk of homelessness at the end of last year were able to move into new long-term, low-cost rental accommodation in Coburg thanks to a $1.6 million Labor Government contribution towards the construction of Women’s Property Initiatives (WPI) units.
The five one-bedroom units and two two-bedroom units are close to public transport, schools, shops, health providers and other community services.
Minister for Consumer Affairs Marlene Kairouz today unveiled a plaque to recognise supporters who helped make it happen.
The residents have faced a range of challenges, including escaping family violence and battling with physical or mental health.
WPI chose women for the units who had connections to the Moreland Hume area and who would benefit from staying close to their support networks.
The buildings have been sustainably designed with features that reduce energy and water consumption and keep bills down.
WPI also received generous financial assistance to help buy the land from the Edward Wilson Estate and the Percy Baxter Charitable Trust.
Last year alone, the Labor Government awarded more than $19 million towards affordable housing projects - transforming the lives of disadvantaged Victorians struggling to enter the private rental market.
