New China-Victoria Medical Exchange To Boost Skills And Research

28 February 2016

Victorian medical students will have the opportunity to expand their skills and experience through a new partnership between Monash University and Wenzhou Medical School.

Minister for Health, Jill Hennessy, yesterday formally secured the agreement following meetings with representatives from Zhejiang Province and the Wenzhou Medical School.

An existing medical student exchange program between the University of Melbourne and Zhejiang University will also be boosted and expanded as a result of today’s meetings.

The new agreement between Monash University and Wenzhou Medical School will see the development of customised and specialist training for health professionals and lecturers, and will support joint research programs, student and scholar exchange, as well as participation in joint seminars and conferences.

GP training has been identified as a key area of focus for the new partner universities.

These new partnerships follow agreements secured by the Premier Daniel Andrews on his visit to China in September last year, which have enabled new healthcare training programs for Victorian GPs and allied health professionals, and new joint ventures in bio-medical research to assist Jiangsu Province develop its aged care, primary and community health sectors.

All of these agreements will help further strengthen Victoria’s ties with China, and enhance our health and medical skills, training and research opportunities.

The Victorian medical technologies and pharmaceuticals sector has been identified by the Andrews Labor Government as one of six key sectors set to drive Victoria’s future economic growth. It employs over 20,000 people and generates $10 billion in revenue, largely through exports to global markets.
