New Broadmeadows School Campus Officially Opened

17 June 2015

Minister for Education, James Merlino, today visited Broadmeadows Special Developmental School to celebrate the official opening of its Dimboola Road Campus.

The campus – for the school’s early and middle years students – provides state-of-the-art flexible classrooms and is purpose-built for students with a moderate to profound intellectual disability.

The campus has specifically-designed spaces which allow individuals or small groups to take part in visual arts, music therapy and food technology programs. The physical education hall will give students an area to play team sports and stay healthy.

Work on the campus began six years ago under the former Labor Government, as a part of the larger Broadmeadows regeneration project.

Between 2006 and 2010, the Broadmeadows Regeneration project saw the 17 existing schools in Broadmeadows reorganised into one secondary college and six primary schools.

The completion of the Dimboola Road Campus allowed the development of the school’s Sorrento Street Campus into a specialist senior years facility.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Education, James Merlino

“Broadmeadows Special Developmental School is a great example of how Victorian children are being supported to reach their full potential, no matter what their learning needs are.”

“The Andrews Labor Government is transforming Victoria into the Education State so that all children have access to high-quality schools regardless of their background and where the live.”

Quote attributable to Member for Broadmeadows, Frank McGuire

“Labor’s commitment to education has provided new opportunities for generations in Broadmeadows and is a testament to its commitment to a fair go. Students and staff are justifiably proud of this significant investment in the Broadmeadows community, which will ensure that current and future generations of students attending the school have access to outstanding facilities and learning opportunities.”
