Victorian music has a new home, with the Andrews Labor Government announcing a one-stop shop for local musicians to work, learn, collaborate and do business.
Minister for Creative Industries Martin Foley and Minister for Planning Richard Wynne today joined members of the music industry in Collingwood to announce the Music Market.
Music Market will open its doors next year as the first tenant of the new Collingwood Arts Precinct on Johnston Street.
It will be home to peak body Music Victoria and youth music organisation The Push – with hot desks and office spaces available for local organisations and businesses of all sizes.
There will be a multipurpose space for events and exhibitions, a training room for education programs, and meeting rooms for the music industry to share ideas.
The Music Market will sit alongside community radio station PBS FM, which last year announced its plans to relocate to the site.
It will also will be home to a new Victorian Music Development Office (VMDO) which will lead a range of programs and projects to strengthen the local music industry.
One of the VMDO’s first projects will be Support Acts for the Big Names – a campaign to boost opportunities for underrepresented musicians, including First Peoples and female artists, by encouraging promoters to book them as supports for established acts.
Music Market and VMDO are both part of the Labor Government’s $22 million Music Works program which is investing in local industry at every level – from artists and venues to labels managers and those behind the scenes.
