Mortlake Welcomes Streetscape Makeover

12 January 2017

Mortlake today welcomed a streetscape upgrade that will revitalise the town’s central business area, improve safety and provide attractive public spaces for locals and visitors to catch up, shop and relax in.

Minister for Regional Development, Jaala Pulford, officially opened the completed streetscape works which were supported by the Andrews Labor Government’s $300,000 investment from the Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund.

The upgrade includes:

  • Street furniture improvements
  • Improved traffic safety
  • Gardens and green spaces using low maintenance and drought tolerant plants
  • Pedestrian links between buildings and public spaces.

The upgrades are set to provide existing businesses with the opportunity to expand and will encourage new businesses to take up tenancy.

Safer crossing points will encourage activity by allowing pedestrians to access businesses on both sides of the street, and landscaping and plantings will enhance the vibrancy and attractiveness of the area.

The modernised streetscape will also encourage at least 10 per cent of the 5,000 daily vehicles passing through to stop, experience and enjoy what Mortlake has to offer.

The Labor Government supported the upgrade in consultation with Moyne Shire Council, Vic Roads and the local community, whose input and recommendations helped to drive the process.

The project is part of a larger plan that will see improvements made to the Mortlake Library, Visitor Information Centre and DC Farran Oval in order to improve the liveability of Mortlake and attracting more visitors.

The Government is supporting the Mortlake streetscape upgrade through its $500 million Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund, which invests in initiatives that build critical infrastructure, create jobs, and support dynamic communities.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Regional Development Jaala Pulford

“We’re proud to support this project, which is a true community project. The Mortlake Community Development Committee together with local residents identified what needed to be improved and worked to drive the change.”

“The Mortlake streetscape upgrade will not only improve the potential for new and existing local businesses to grow and prosper, it will create a beautiful, modern public space for the entire community to enjoy and share.”
