More Level Crossings To Go As Carrum Blitz Begins

30 January 2020

A two-week construction blitz that will remove three dangerous and congested level crossings, build a new Carrum Station and provide another connection to the Nepean Highway will kick off in Carrum this Sunday.

Premier Daniel Andrews joined Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan and Member for Carrum Sonya Kilkenny to inspect progress at the site today, where more than 180 people will work around the clock to remove temporary tracks, connect the Frankston line to the new rail bridge and build the new station.

Closing the crossings at Eel Race Road in Carrum and Mascot Avenue in Bonbeach will be the first step in the two-week blitz. A new direct connection from McLeod Road to the Nepean Highway will open on Monday, 10 February.

With no boom gates to hold up traffic and the new Karrum Karrum Bridge connecting Station Street across the Patterson River, travel times around Carrum will be faster and more reliable.

The new Carrum Station will open to passengers on Monday, 17 February, with trains travelling across the new rail bridge. The station has been specifically designed to accommodate coastal weather conditions, with weather protection pods, shelter canopies on the platform and wind screens in entrances.

The new station will create new community open spaces with a town square at its main entrance, a garden at the southern entrance, and a new foreshore park and beach promenade linking Carrum to the bay.

Finishing touches on the station, parking and landscaping will continue through 2020 – with more than 80,000 mostly native and indigenous trees and shrubs planted by the end of the year.

During the construction blitz, buses will replace trains on the Frankston line from Moorabbin to Frankston and Stony Point from Sunday, 2 to Sunday, 16 February.

In addition, Mentone Station will close in late-March 2020 and Cheltenham Station will close from mid-April 2020 to remove the level crossings at Park Road and Charman Road in Cheltenham, and the Balcombe Road in Mentone.

Trains will run express through the stations until a two-month closure of a section of the Frankston line which will run from mid-May to mid-July 2020.

These works are part of the Andrews Labor Government’s $3 billion investment on the Frankston line, which will remove 18 level crossings and build 12 new stations. For information, visit www.bigbuild.vic.gov.auExternal Link .
