More Jobs In Regional Victoria

26 May 2016

Regional Victorians are benefiting from the State’s strong economy, with figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today showing 13,000 extra people in work compared to three months ago.

The ABS figures for April, released today, show that the regional unemployment rate has now fallen to 6.1 per cent, below the national regional average, and down from the 6.6% that existed under the previous government.

The Bendigo and Ballarat regions are leading the trend, with Bendigo’s unemployment rate at 5 per cent, down from 6.8 per cent three months ago, and Ballarat dropping from 8.2 per cent to 5.9 per cent.

Shepparton has also seen a dramatic drop to 3.5 per cent unemployment for April, down from 8 per cent.

There have been a total of 113,500 new jobs created across Victoria since the Andrews Labor Government was elected.

The State’s labour market is expected to remain robust, bolstered by the 2016/17 Victorian Budget, which invests heavily in infrastructure, vital services, and regional Victoria.

Compared to other states, regional Victoria recorded the largest increase in both total and full-time employment over the past three months.
