The Andrews Labor Government is restoring one of Moonee Ponds’ most cherished heritage assets, the Moonee Ponds Court House.
Minister for Planning Richard Wynne and Member for Essendon Danny Pearson today announced a $1.5 million grant from the Labor Government’s Living Heritage Program, which is giving communities all over Victoria the resources to protect our treasured heritage.
The former Moonee Ponds Court House was built in 1890 and operated as a court house until the mid-1970s.
In 2016, fire engulfed the heritage-listed building, destroying the roof and damaging the period timber woodwork. It remains in a state of disrepair.
The Government has already committed $300,000 to complete emergency works to save the building.
Our renewed investment will reconstruct new timber ceilings and joinery, complete floor repairs and provide new fire safety measures.
Our heritage is a reminder of our bold history and our state-listed assets give suburbs and towns a great sense of pride.
A $5 million boost to the Living Heritage Program in the Victorian Budget 2017/18 will protect these iconic assets for years to come.
Applications are now open for the latest round of Living Heritage Program grants, which close next month.
