A $40 million upgrade to Hallam Rd in Hampton Park just needs the final touches, with Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan and Member for Narre Warren South Judith Graley visiting the site today.
After two fatal accidents which resulted in five fatalities in 2009, the local community called for this important road safety upgrade. It was funded by the previous Labor Government in 2010.
Works began in March 2012 to upgrade a 2.5 kilometre section of Hallam Road in each direction between Pound Rd and Ormond Rd.
The project was largely completed and opened to traffic in late December 2014, so road users are already seeing safer road conditions, improvements to traffic flow and improved pedestrian and cycling facilities.
The upgrade has included widening Hallam Rd to three lanes each way between Pound Rd and Coral Dv/Fordholm Rd, and two lanes in each direction between Coral Dv/Fordholm Rd and Ormond Rd. Intersections and traffic signals were also upgraded as part of the project.
This section of Hallam Rd was considered the highest priority section for the overall duplication of Hallam Rd between Princes Hwy and South Gippsland Hwy.
Member for Narre Warren South, Judith Graley, said pedestrian safety was improved with a new signalised pedestrian crossing to service St Kevin’s Primary School and the Hampton Park Shopping Centre. Connecting Lynbrook Blvd to Hallam Rd via the Ormond Rd intersection is also a key feature.
Minor works including landscaping and bus lane modifications will continue over these warmer months to finalise the upgrade.
