Minister Congratulates Wodonga Apprentice And Officially Opens Group Training Association Of Victoria State Conference

18 June 2015

Minister for Training and Skills Steve Herbert today congratulated Wodonga apprentice Andrew Hayes and his employer on their training achievements, before opening the Group Training Association of Victoria (GTAV) state conference.

Mr Herbert met with fourth-year apprentice Andrew Hayes at his host employer, Complex Air Conditioning, and presented two Certificates of Appreciation on behalf of the GTAV.

Mr Herbert said Andrew had demonstrated great commitment to his training and to developing trade skills that would lead to a long-lasting career, while his employer had demonstrated ongoing support for apprentice development.

Group Training Organisations (GTOs) are the state’s largest network of apprentice and trainee employers, with more than 6000 Victorian apprentices and trainees employed by GTOs.

Speaking at the GTAV state conference, Mr Herbert said GTOs played a crucial role in supporting people to develop the skills they need to get long-lasting and rewarding jobs.

Mr Herbert also re-affirmed the Andrews Labor Government’s $3.1 million funding to GTOs for the next financial year, after the Federal Government ceased funding.

The funding will support GTOs to address industry skills needs, provide employment opportunities for young people and help workers retrain in emerging industries.

This investment in GTOs is in addition to the $320 million boost to TAFE institutes provided by the 2015-16 Victorian Budget. This new funding will support TAFE institutes to invest in new facilities and deliver more training that supports jobs.

The Labor Government has made a commitment that at least 10 per cent of the workforce on projects of state significance will be reserved for apprentices providing additional employment and training opportunities in trade related jobs.
