Software developers, designers and mining industry experts will be locked in a 54 hour brainstorming challenge for the Unearthed Melbourne Hackathon.
Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio launched the Hackathon at Teamsquare in Melbourne on Friday night, with the event running all weekend.
The event combines IT skills, creative thinking and engineering prototyping as teams compete non-stop for 54 hours to solve a real-world challenge in the mining and resources industry.
The Unearthed Melbourne Hackathon is the curtain-raiser to the International Mining and Resources Conference 2015 (IMARC 2015) being held in Melbourne next week.
More than 3000 delegates are expected to attend IMARC 2015, which runs from 9 to 12 November at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The Unearthed Melbourne Hackathon is designed to prepare Victorian companies to capitalise on technological disruption in the global resources sector, predicted to be worth $100 billion.
Victoria is the largest exporter of mining equipment, technology and services in Australia.
There are around 1,900 companies employing 21,000 people across the state in exploration, resources development and production products, engineering consulting, construction, information and communications technology, international education, financial, legal and professional services.
The Unearthed Melbourne Hackathon is organised by Resources Innovation through Information Technology (RIIT), an Australian not-for-profit company with a mission to create a sustainable technology innovation ecosystem that leverages the strength of the local resources sector.
